Current Issue (Issue 118)

Thought of the Week:- "In helping others, we shall help ourselves, for whatever good we give out completes the circle and comes back to us."
PortalApp:- http://www.aspapp.com/apps/products.asp?catid=66&prodid=portalapp Free (385 KB zipped). Windows. IIS 4.0 or above should be installed.

PortalApp is a complete ready-to-run Web portal system. PortalApp combines the functionality of several ASP modules into a common database and full-featured application. With this pre-built application source code one can create and manage users, membership, content, articles, events, news, links, discussion forums, files, advertising, faq's, downloads, surveys, shopping cart, classified ads and more. This is an excellent portal software, which can be used to create a Yahoo or Google Directory like portal. Administrator can create any level of hierarchies and documents can be put into that. These hierarchies can be interlinked also (see also style). For example: Hierarchical element of one division can be linked to hierarchical element of another division. The article has to be approved by editor or administrator after submission. One can also rate or rank the article and based on this, listing of most popular or hot articles can be seen. Articles can also be interlinked. The software also provides the facility of Discussion Forum.

The design is easily changed via style sheets and customizable HTML includes. One can change the theme, style look, colour and fonts. One can easily customise it as per their organisation need. Access or SQL database can be used as a back-end. The best thing is that Full Source Code is also available along with the software. It can be used to extend functionality according to any site requirements. Briefly the features can be described as below:

Link & Resource Management: Yahoo style link display and management. Create and manage multple category levels, and enable user listing submission. Administrator can approve listings, and visitors can rate listings.

  • Organize hierarchical categories of links
  • Yahoo style searching
  • User listing submission
  • Approve, edit, administer listings
  • Rate listings and traffic statistics

Content & Article Management: Works with various content types. Compose and display articles, news, or other HTML content bodies.

  • On-line HTML editing makes author submission easy
  • Manage multiple content categories and 'types'

User & Login Management: Manage user registration, logins, password lookup, and reports.

  • Custom user registration, login
  • Track user statistics
  • Enable personalized features based on user interests
Enterprise version of the software contains more features like User Statistics, Image Gallery, FAQ's, Site Map, Ad management, File Uploading and Management, Chat, Conference, e-commerce, Event Calendar etc. and it is of $389.00.
